The need for a robust tech strategy

To continue delivering excellent client service while keeping up with tightening regulations, wealth manager Wealtheon partnered with Unikoo as a strategic CTO. A clearly defined digital strategy and the secure handling of processes are essential to meet the requirements of regulators such as the FSMA and evolving legal frameworks like DORA.

At the same time, Wealtheon faced several technological challenges, including dependencies on outdated systems and specific individuals. The application landscape also needed to become more scalable and support future digital strategies.

To address these challenges, Wealtheon opted for Unikoo’s flexible CTO services. Rather than acting as a distant third party, our CTO worked as an integrated member of the management team, focused on strengthening internal and external stakeholder engagement and safeguarding Wealtheon’s strategic interests.

Our approach

The partnership began with a comprehensive audit of the application landscape. This analysis covered the application, data and infrastructure layers, with special attention to process analysis, (data) dependencies and security. The outcome was a central, independent source of documentation in Confluence. Throughout the partnership, we regularly aligned with key stakeholders via structured check-ins and interim touchpoints. This enabled continuous knowledge sharing and validation of the documentation.

From insight to oversight: a thorough tech audit

The audit revealed several risks, including:

  • Heavy reliance on specific individuals to manage a mainly on-premise application landscape
  • Duplication of operational data, resulting in errors and inefficiencies
  • Use of traditional or outdated technologies and work methods
  • Compliance risks relating to DORA and cybersecurity

By properly documenting and structuring processes and data architecture, we ensured knowledge was transferable and legacy systems were phased out. Targeted optimisations and a plan for continuous monitoring paved the way for a solid digital foundation and greater operational efficiency.

From strategy to implementation: a digital roadmap

Without a long-term vision, digital transformation tends to remain reactive and introduce new dependencies. That’s why we developed a digital roadmap to steer Wealtheon’s strategic transformation and anchor sustainable technology choices.

This roadmap focused on:

  • Modernising the application landscape
  • Migrating towards a modular cloud architecture to replace the current on-premise point-to-point setup
  • Optimising banking integrations and digital services for Wealtheon’s clients

Innovation played a key role, with AI and automation being leveraged to improve data analysis and customer interaction. The roadmap itself is a dynamic, evolving plan that adapts to new developments and needs. It also serves as a strategic framework for quarterly management meetings and board discussions, ensuring business leaders can take informed decisions aligned with the company’s long-term vision.
